How to Say Thank You to Our Veterans

Salute VeteransThough it’s been overshadowed by the recent election arena, Veterans Day is still coming at the end of this week and it’s time to stop and say thanks.

A major issue for this election, and many elections past, has been how exactly do we say thank you to those who sacrifice their time, their families, their health, and even their life to protect our country and the free world. This question dates back to the Revolutionary War and it still remains unsettled.

Listen to Kevin King’s discussion regarding veteran’s affairs and the history of compensating veterans for their service.

Also, don’t forget to say thank you to some of the 20.5 million veterans in America on Veterans Day this Friday, November 11th.

Bouncing Into Injury: Trampoline Hazards & Risks

TrampolineThat common backyard toy your kids continue to ask you for is more than just a toy; trampolines are a money pit and injury waiting to happen.

In 2013 alone there were more than 286,000 reported injuries due to trampolines including broken bones, spinal injuries, and head injuries. Ninety percent of the injuries were from kids ages 5-13. You might believe adult supervision and safety nets could reduce these injuries but that is not the case. One third of these injuries occurred while under adult supervision and there is no data showing that trampoline netting helps reduce injuries.

What’s the cost of all of this? In 2014, trampoline injuries had an economic cost of $9 BILLION from medical and legal cost to time off of work and pain and suffering.

Listen in as Kevin King discusses the hazards and risks of backyard trampolines. He’ll also discuss how trampoline parks are equally dangerous and what steps you have to take to stay safe if you are determined to keep a backyard trampoline.

  • Drowning is the second leading cause of death for children ages 3-6
  • In 2013 the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) noted that  200 children ages 1-14 died in pools and spas
  • It only takes two minutes for child to loose consciousness
  • There are approximately 800 spinal cord injuries from diving annually (1/4 related to pool incidents)

Politics: The More Things Change, the More They Stay the Same

NewspapersThe 2016 Presidential election is in full swing and, unless you have cut yourself off from the outside world, you’ve been privy to a front row seat of the unfolding battle. A big story playing out in this year’s election process is the split in the Republican Party. On a regular basis there is news about presidential candidate Donald Trump against Candidate X or against Candidate Y. The recurring theme is Trump against the rest.

For many, seeing the party split may be a new experience. There has not been a major party contention such as this for many decades. But, if you search through the history books, you’ll find it’s a tale told over and over again. The more things change, the more they stay the same, politics not excepted.

Listen in as Kevin King discusses political upheaval and party splits of the past, starting with the first party split of the Democrat-Republican party in the early 19th century.
